Cheerleading Injury
There was a recent article posted in Times about the dangers of cheerleading and how many fatalities and there are, how risky it is, and what to do about it. The problem in this sport, yes sport, is that a lot of coaches are not properly trained and pushed kids to limits that they, as a coach, don’t even know how to properly teach. The article talks about a girl who died 2 years ago when she fell on her stomach and ruptured her spleen. What the article doesn’t say is that the girl did not fall, she was caught by her bases, but she didn’t complete her twist in the cradle and therefore landed on her stomach. Did she has mono? Was she sick to begin with? It takes a lot for your spleen to rupture, but if your sick with something like mono it could happen very easily. Was the girl not ready to do a full twisting cradle? Did the coach push her to do it? These are things the article doesn’t talk about. I’m not trying to sound like as ass, and I am very sorry that people have died from the sport. However, coaches need to get properly trained so that things like this don’t happen. Administrators and Athletic Directors need to have a more hands on approach to this sport in their schools. Most schools officials are happy if they find someone that wants to coach. They need to be involved, make sure the coach is certified, attend practice and have some accountability! Hire people that have some knowledge, be willing to pay them what they are worth and so on!
Stop blaming the sport and start blaming the people in charge!
